"Engineering a New Frontier - The Next Age of Space Exploration"

Captain Scott D. Tingle

Captain Scott D. Tingle was selected as one of 14 members of the 2009 NASA Astronaut class and recently returned from a mission to the International Space Station Expeditions 54 and 55. Scott launched aboard Soyuz 53S (MS-06) in December 2017 and landed in June 2018. Scott’s talk will highlight his personal engineering background that led to his selection as a NASA Astronaut as well as showcase his mission aboard the ISS and a look forward to the challenges of NASA’s next age of space exploration. This keynote will help attendees realize the significance of our engineering community as we face our own challenges in our industry and work to find solutions as we build and strengthen our critical infrastructure.

Scott was raised in Randolph, Massachusetts, earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts University, and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. Following graduate school, Captain Tingle spent three years with the Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, California, as a member of technical staff in their Propulsion Department; and was commissioned as a naval officer in 1991. He was part of the Navy's response to September 11 assigned to Carrier Air Wing Eleven (CVW-11) aboard USS Carl Vinson. In addition to his spaceflight experience, he has accumulated more than 4,500 flight hours in 51 types of aircraft, 750 carrier arrestments, and 54 combat missions. In other assignments, he has been the test pilot for various aircraft and has been awarded a Meritorious Service Medal, three Air Medals, and six Navy Commendation Medals.
